Closing the existing Gender Data Gap. Making relevant Gender Statistics available
A working session was organized to mainstream gender in the future National Strategy for the Development of Statistics 2030 (NSDS 2030). It was an initiative of the National Statistical System with the technical and financial support of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) Cameroon under the "Woman Count project".
The Working session was chaired by Mrs NIEKOU Rosalie Head of Division of Social and Demographic Statistics at the National Institute of Statistics who is also the co-chair of the permanent working group on gender statistics. It was all about seizing the opportunity of the ongoing process of the development of the NSDS2030, to enrich it with actions and interventions that will contribute to close the existing gender data gap in the country and make more quality and relevant gender statistics available for the monitoring of SDGs and the National Development Strategy.
During this training session, 21 statistics experts from the National Statistical System and Gender Experts from the Minister of Women Empowerment and Family, civil society organizations and media actively participated and provided valuable contributions to address the existing gender challenge faced with the finishing NSDS.
At the end of the session the draft of the NSDS was enriched with more actions and interventions on gender issues, a mapping of national and international data sources to close gender data gap and an action plan to implement the gender objectives of the Strategy which will be presented to the National Council of Statistics in early April 2021. The next step for this activity will be the alignment of indicators with national sources, the elaboration of the guideline for gender indicators and a dissemination plan for gender data.
